This week has been an emotional week as this is the time of year when we need to say goodbye to the students and teachers who will not be with us in the new school year. So my topic for today is to stop and think how the behaviour of children is impacted by changes like this.
In my experience, the needs of challenging children can escalate at this time of year due to the additional stresses which come with change. Maybe the child is leaving and moving to a new environment and/or a new school. Maybe they are loosing friends or are anxious about their new teachers. Whatever the reason it remains a difficult time of transition and a typical time for behaviours to surface.
As adults we need to..... Stop and Think.....
What can we do to help when the stresses of the class party or end of year trip promote challenging behaviour?
How can we help the children in our care?
In my opinion this is a challenging time for us as adults. We need to dig deep and find our patience and understanding to weather these last weeks. The children need us to empathise with them and what they are experiencing. We need to be their safe haven.
Here is something that you may find interesting
I have been listening to the revised edition of an audible book this week, which is called 'Lost at School' by Ross W. Greene. In his book the author talks about how challenging kids have still to develop the necessary skills to regulate their behaviour. He believes that behavioural skills need to be supported in the same way as we support children who are having difficulties in learning to read and write.
I will talk a little more about my findings from this book next time.................
