In the legendary words of Alice Cooper, ‘School’s Out for Summer’ let’s not make it ‘Out Forever’.
If you read and listen to the reports on student exclusions it would appear they are at an all time high. I need to ask, Why?...
Why? When we are more informed today of how to help challenging children.
Why? When we understand the need for inclusion in order to facilitate success.
Why? When the alternatives are so life changing and impactful to both the child and their family.
If we consider that exclusions are a direct result of the implementation of a School Behaviour Program or Behaviour Plan then we must also consider the reality of the program/plan. On this note here is an interesting thought from Dr Ross Greene, the author of ‘Lost at School’ , which I recommended in my previous post.
‘If a school behaviour program is not working for the kids that need to learn adaptive skills then it needs to be changed’.
According to Greene, children who conform to school behaviour programs are not behaving in this way as a result of the program but as a result of their developed adaptive skills. This is an interesting perspective and one which I would like you to reflect on.
How are we affecting the children in our care if we implement programs and plans which set them up for failure?
